FAQ

Commonly asked questions related to strategy consulting

What does a strategy consultant do?

Strategy consultants help businesses determine who they are, where they want to go and how they will get there. The business has the insider information. It’s the strategy consultant’s job to ask the right questions, research the market and identify the right strategic direction to benefit the business.

Why do organizations use strategy consultants?

An obvious question that comes to mind is: “Why don’t organisations just take care of the strategy work themselves?”

Consultants are generally brought in on the important decisions that are vital to the future of the company – to make sure that every angle is considered. Strategy consultants can immerse themselves entirely in the question at hand, while leadership is normally tied up with the actual running of the company. Consultants also offer deep expertise in a particular industry or subject, such as positioning or business planning.

How do I know if I need a strategy consultant?

It all starts with a question, a challenge or an opportunity.  For example, your organization is launching a new branded product or service to an existing product portfolio and you are not sure of the best brand architecture strategy.

Should the new product be a sub-brand (i.e. Google Maps, Google Books, Google Translate)? Or a stand-alone brand (i.e. Nike, Waze, Mobileye)? Why or why not? It’s the consultant’s job to consider the various options and make the best strategic recommendation for your specific business.

In another example, consider a start-up business that’s going on an investment roadshow and needs a presentation to tell their unique story. In today’s competitive world, a great idea is no longer enough. A great idea needs to be communicated in a professional, concise and compelling presentation to capture the attention (and wallet) of future investors.

I strongly believe that the best organizations know their strengths – and also know when it’s time to seek external help. Strategy consultant to the rescue!
